The Princedom of Clifton Forge

Join the court

“We enjoy the night, the darkness, where we can do things that aren't acceptable in the light.“

The Princedom of Clifton Forge is a group for those to hold true laws and traditions of the Kindred. Keeping the veil closed at all times from those who do not hold the undead gift. A place where the Kindred reign supreme.

princedom titles & roles

Prince: Ruler of the city. The title is Prince regardless of the gender of the one who holds the position. The Tradition of Hospitality demands that new Vampires to the city introduce themselves to the Prince. An introduction to the Prince may need to be secured from a current citizen. (Alternatively, a new vampire to the city may send their calling card to the Hand to be afforded an appointment with the Prince.

Hand Of The Prince: Appointed by the Prince. The Hand is the go-between for the population and the Prince. If a given matter is less than emergency level and of less than epic proportions, it must be presented to the Hand first. Particularly powerful vampires may try to address the Prince directly, with varying degrees of success and social consequences. The Hand also acts as arbiter for smaller disagreements between vampires—trivial or minor matters that should not bother the Prince. Matters of blood or life debts go before the Prince instead, but the Hand may arrange this audience. (When the Prince is away, the Hand acts in their stead and must answer for their actions and decisions when the Prince returns!)

Sheriff: Appointed by the Prince. Oversees the defense of the Kindred within the city. Keeps tabs on other supernaturals, in particular Hunters, and, when necessary, organizes battles. Attacks must still be approved by the Prince and Council. However, a savvy Sheriff can ask forgiveness for a well-laid assault rather than risk being denied permission. Success in such matters is generally ruled as more important than politeness.

Teacher of the Kin: For those who are without a Sire, this person will be in charge in teaching them the ways of the Kindred. In Traditions and Vampire Law. They may also help in setting the young with a proper clan. They will be held accountable for any childe in their care, just as any Sire would be.

The council

Councillor: Each coterie or clan assigns a Vampire to sit on the council. The council advises the Prince but has no decision-making power. The councillor ensures that their clan or coterie is heard by the Prince and the others of the Council, acting as their clan or coterie’s voice. Each coterie or clan of 4 or more Vampires may be represented on the council. Councillors are not called by their personal name but by the name of their clan or coterie. This is a formality that serves to always remind the councillors of their purpose.

(And, in SL where there can be high turnover, ensures simplicity. For example, a Vampire of Clan Douglas would always be Councillor Douglas in formal speech, and called by a personal name only informally, regardless of their personal name. In cases of coteries with elaborate names, this persists. For example, a coterie called Per Aeternum would have Councillor Per Aeternum.)

Chancellor: Each coterie or clan assigns a backup Vampire for the council seat. A Vampire empowered to sit in on a meeting when their Councillor is unavailable. This vampire is also often responsible for back door deals to try and sway other clans or coteries to support the position of that Chancellor’s Councillor

Princedom traditions

I. The Masquerade: Every member of the princedom commits to concealing the existence of vampire-kind from mortals. Should a breach of the Masquerade become known, the vampire responsible may be punished harshly, as determined by the Court, up to and including final death. This includes sharing details of vampire existence, strengths, and weaknesses with non-vampires, feeding indiscreetly, disposing of bodies indiscreetly, and using vampiric powers in a noticeable manner around mortals. Maintaining the Masquerade is the foremost tradition of the Princedom, made all the more necessary by technology and overpopulation in the modern age.

II. Hospitality: The tradition of hospitality dictates that visitors to a domain must present themselves to the ruler of that domain. The entirety of Clifton Forge is considered to be the Prince's domain, and all vampires seeking to join the Princedom must present themselves at once to the Court to be acknowledged as allies of the Prince. It is understood that the Court will never decline hospitality to a visiting vampire or new resident without significant reason, though the Court may, at its discretion, charge a boon against the newcomer as proof of good faith.

III. Domain: The tradition of domain instructs that each vampire's personal domain must be respected. Within a town as small as Clifton Forge, only the Prince is considered to have geographic domain, but individual kindred may lay claim to personal blood donors, ghouls, and pets. These should be clearly identified in some manner so that other kindred will not mistake them as unclaimed. Should a vampire ignore or disrespect another's claim on their personal domain, they may be brought before the Court for punishment.

IV. Right of Creation: Princedom vampires must receive permission to create progeny from the Court before making a childe. Childer created without the Court's approval may be destroyed at the Court's say-so. Every vampire considering the making of progeny should fully consider the potential ramifications of their choice and be prepared to present a sound argument to the Court. The Court may also require a boon in exchange for permission. Should a new childe prove intractable or unsuited for the eternal night, their sire may be asked to "reclaim their blood" by destroying the childe. Should the sire refuse to do so, the Court may appoint another to do what the sire will not.

V. Accounting: Until a Sire releases a new childe from accounting, the childe's actions are the sire's responsibility. The sire is liable and punishable for the childe's mistakes, especially breaches of the Masquerade. Should a fledgling enter the Clifton Forge princedom without a sire for any reason, that fledgling should present themselves to the Court, which will rule whether the fledgling is eligible to reside in the Princedom on their own recognizance . Should a fledgling be found unfit for such responsibility, they may be blood-bound and adopted into an existing Princedom vampire's clan. An unfit fledgling who refuses adoption may, at the Court's discretion, be banished from the Princedom, denied rights to hunt within the Prince's domain, or even destroyed.

VI. Right of Destruction: The right of destruction and the right to call the Blood Hunt belongs solely to the Prince or the Prince's agent. No princedom vampire may slay another princedom vampire without specific dispensation. It is at the Prince's word alone that Final Death may be visited as punishment upon our kind.

VII. Marking: Any Human/Ghoul under your protection should be marked. I.E Branding or tattooing. Register your symbol and human/ghoul with the Inner council. These are to bind that person to yourself and/or clan(corteries) and make sure other Kindred know as well.

VIII. Right of Dueling: Any Kindred may call a Right of Duel in the Blood Temple with The Prince present to solve a conflict or The Prince may call for one to settle a conflict. If called the two Kindred will settle it old fashion style but with no firearms. It will be simple Vampire against vampire and once it is over the loser may not present the same conflict to The Prince for 3 months.

politics

Clan: a group of vampires of the same bloodline.

Coterie: a group that associates closely. This may be strictly vampires or may include non-vampires.

Council event: The city positions and any clan or coterie leads who qualify meet to discuss issues involving the city.

Court event: Usually a fancy affair. Everyone who wishes to speak to the Prince should speak to the Hand first to get “on the list” to be called. This is a good time for Vampires new to the city to meet the Prince. Any Vampire with a matter of blood or life debts (Princely issues, rather than Hand issues) may address the Prince as well, in an orderly fashion, as called by the Hand.
